THE SKY CITY
El 18 de Noviembre viajamos con nuestra amiga Cynthia Wooley a una ciudad llamada ACOMA (monumento nacional de los EEUU) que esta situada en una meseta elevada a casi 4oo pies , este pueblo se encuentra a aproximadamente 7000 pies sobre el nivel del mar y es el mas antiguo en EEUU que ha estado habitado continuamente . en 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado fue el primer hombre blanco que llego a la llamada “ciudad del cielo” empezando por el nombre y la forma de vida en el pueblo, Acoma mantiene cierto misticismo hasta nuestros dias… algunos lugares no se pueden fotografiar por considerarse sagrados, ( como el Cementerio y la mision, construida a inicios del siglo XVII) no se pueden tomar fotos de sus habitantes o sus obras si no es con su permiso (por cierto, ademas de la entrada se debe pagar una cuota por usar camara); pero pudimos conocer mucho sobre este pueblo ya que en el Centro Cultural organizan tours guiados para quienes quieran visitar este maravilloso lugar.

Sus trabajos de alfareria alcanzan precios estratosfericos pero cuando uno observa esos trabajos de cerca, la precision y los disenos totalmente a mano uno se da cuenta de cuanto tiempo(semanas) les lleva terminar una sola pieza. dentro del pueblo habia grandes contrastes: por un lado, lo austero de las casas y por otro las camionetas ultimo modelo que vimos estacionadas… me pregunto si eso tiene algo que ver con que los casinos pertenecen a los indios y en cierta forma se les esta retribuyendo lo que en algun tiempo se les quito
En este pueblo no hay agua corriente y En la antiguedad, la entrada de las casas era por el techo Por eso todavia se pueden ver grandes escaleras recargadas en algunas de las casas, las puertas a nivel del piso fueron introducidas por los españoles quienes como todo conquistador, llegaron a imponer muchas de sus costumbres no sin la Resistencia de lo. indios que ahi habitaban.
Otro dato interesante es el que las mujeres dentro de esta sociedad son las que heredan las propiedades de la familia.
On November 18th we traveled with our friend Cynthia Wooley to a city called ACOMA .This town is located on a 400 feet elevated plateau and about 7000 feet above sea level and is the oldest continuous inhabited town in the USA. In 1540, the Spanish Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was the first white man to get to the so called “Sky city” . Starting with the name and the way of life of its people, Acoma has certain mysticism until nowadays … some of the places there can not be photographed because they are considered sacred, ( like the cemetery and the interior of the old mission built in the early 17th century )you cannot take pictures of its people or their works without their permission ( by the way, besides de entrance, you need to pay for a special permit if you plan to take pictures) , but we could know more about this town Since the Cultural Center organizes guided tours for those wanting to see this marvelous place..
Some of their clay works are very expensive but when you take a close look to these works, their precision and design you realize how much time (weeks) only one piece may take. There were some contrasts in the town: on one side austerity of their homes and way of life were as on the other side, brand new pick ups parked nearby … I wonder if that has to do with the casinos belonging to the Indians retributing in a certain way what was taken from them in the past times.
The town does not have any running water and in the old times , the entrance of the houses was through the ceiling that’s why you could see some big ladders on the sides of some of the houses. The doors on ground level were introduced by the Spanish conquerors who upon arrival they imposed many customs not without the Indians resistance.
Other interesting piece of information is that women here are the ones that inherit the land of their ancestors.
