El AÑO DE LA RATA

AÑO NUEVO

Aunque ya estamos en Febrero, aún siguen las celebraciones del año nuevo… esta vez nos toco asistir al Centro Cultural Chino el Sábado 9 de Febrero y aunque estaba repleto de personas (fuimos con Cynthia y nos habíamos quedado de ver con Janice pero no la vimos en la muchedumbre) pudimos apreciar la participación de niños y adultos en esta fecha tan especial; hubo muestras de artes marciales como el Tai Chi Chuan y el Kung Fu, así como bailes de listones y abanicos culminando con las danzas del León y del Dragón en donde los participantes demostraron su pericia todo esto acompañado por música de tambores en vivo….
La celebración del año de la rata no termino ahí pues después de eso terminamos cenando en un restaurante Japonés…ustedes se preguntaran …y que tiene que ver lo Japonés con lo Chino? Pues el plan original era cenar en un restaurante chino.. pero cuando llegamos hubo un problema con la reservación así que nos metimos en el restaurante de junto que resulto excelente! Compartimos un barco con diferentes creaciones de la cocina japonesa y acompañados de sake caliente, (nunca lo había yo probado caliente..nada mal) y para cerrar con broche de oro… helado de te verde.






Although we are already in February New Year’s celebrations continue …this time we went to the Chinese Cultural Center on Saturday February 9 and although it was crowded ( we went with Cynthia and we were supposed to meet Janice there but we couldn’t see her among the crowd) we could take a look at the participating adults and children on this special date. There were some martial arts like Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu , as well as ribbon and fan dances ending the presentation with the traditional dances of the Lion and the dance of the Dragon where the participants showed their ability. All of this, accompanied by live drums.




The celebration of the year of the rat did not end up there since we had dinner in a Japanese restaurant… you may be wondering… and what do japaneses have to do with the Chinese New Year? Well the original plan was to have dinner at a Chinese restaurant … but when we got there there was a problem with the reservation so we ended up in the next door restaurant which turned out to be just excellent! We shared a sampler boat accompanied by warm sake ( I had never tried it war…not bad) and to end the magnificent dinner … green tea ice cream.

Nieve, nieve

MORE SNOW

Estaba empezando a creer que nos habíamos perdido las nevadas de invierno cuando de pronto, el 4 de Febrero escarchitas de nieve empezaron a caer sobre mi cara cuando regresaba de trabajar y así countinuo por varias horas . Cesar y yo salimos a disfrutar de la nieve, aunque ya estaba obscuro cuando dejo de nevar (10 pm) y salimos del departamento para disfrutar de la nueve y tomar algunas fotos.






La mañana siguiente me lleve mi cámara y camino la escuela tome algunas fotos mas. Mientras caminaba y tomaba fotos no pude evitar sentirme nostálgica recordando aquellas caminatas en la nieve cuando estaba estudiando en Ohio ( nieve “real” pues eran meses de nevadas continuas) aunque no se si 15 años después soportaría tanta nieve

I was beginning to think we had missed winter snow when on February 4th some snow started to fall and would continue for a couple of hours. Cesar and I went out to enjoy it , although it was already dark (10 pm) when we left our apartment to enjoy the snow and take some pictures.

The next day, I took my camera with me and on my way to school I took some more pictures. When I was walking and looking at the snow I couldn’t help getting nostalgic remembering those walks on the snow while I studied al Ohio University ( real snow over there jeje moths since snow storms last) I., don’t know if I would be able to stand that kind of snow 15 years later

ENERO 2008

Antes de empezar clases de primavera en CNM nuevamente nos invitaron a almorzar en un restaurante hindú … la comida estaba muy rica y pasamos el tiempo con Janice Hart y Cynthia Wooley!
El 20 de Enero Pat y Robert White nos invitaron a quitar los adornos de su árbol de navidad … después de eso nos invitaron a cenar a un restaurante mexicano y el 29 de Enero Alburquereque amaneció cubierto con un manto delgado de nieve . Nunca habia yo visto nopales en la nieve!he aquí algunas fotos










Before starting Spring classes at CNM again Cesar and I were invited to eat lunch at a hindu restaurant … the food there was really nice and we enjoyed our time with Janice Hart and Cynthya Wooley !
On January 20th Pat and Robert White invited us to take the Christmas decorations down from their Christmas tree… After that they invited us dinner at a Mexican restaurant and January 29th Alburquerque had one more snow fall . I had never seen nopales in the snow; here are some pictures I want to share with you.

PURAS FIESTAS


Asistí a algunas presentaciones escolares de mi sobrina la primera fue en su escuela donde pude verla participar en “la rama” una tradición navideña del 15 al 24 de Diciembre y que poco a poco se esta perdiendo, además, Miriam participo en bailables jarochos típicos como “la bruja” y “la bamba”. Otra presentación fue en el coro al que ella pertenece , etc. Esta es una época en que muchas escuela organizan presentaciones de navidad.





Para cuando llegaron la navidad y año nuevo la pasamos en familia…. En año nuevo mi familia invito a Nancy a pasar la celebración con nosotros … entre la piñata, las 12 uvas y el confeti, creo que la hicimos sentir en familia…..Ahí también Nancy pudo conocer la tradición de “el Viejo” que sale a cantar a las calles anunciando su partida y la llegada del Año Nuevo.




Por cierto...casi olvido mencionar.... el 17 de dic. Cesar y yo visitamos a nancy en su apartamento y aprendimos a hacer unas galletas con figuras tipicas de la navidad... Nancy, recuerda escribirme la receta por favor!

Estuvimos en Xalapa hasta el 7 de Enero así que pudimos compartir con Nancy otra de nuestras tradiciones : la rosca de Reyes…. Acompañada de chocolate y ponche. Y después… de vuelta a Albuquerque.


JUST PARTYING




While in Xalapa I went to some school presentations where my niece took part, the first one was in her primary school where she participated in (for brief video click here)“la rama” a Christmas celebration from Dec 15 to Dec 24th and that unfortunately it is less and less common to see, besides that, Miriam participated in typical jarocho dances like “la bruja” and “la bamba” . Other presentation was the one of her chorus, etc…this is a time when many schools hold their Christmas perfomances.

When Christmas and New Year arrived, we spent that time among family… on new years Eve, my family invited Nancy to celebrate it with us…among the piñata, the 12 grapes and the confetti, I think we made Nancy feel at home… there, she also could see the tradition of “el Viejo” that goes out to the streets singing about his departure and the arrival of the New Year.

By the way... I almost forgot to mention that on december 17th we went to see nancy at her apartment and that she taught us to make some delicious typical Christmas cookies... Nancy please don't forget to give me that recipe!.

We were in Xalapa until January 7th so we could share with nancy one more Mexican tradition: the “rosca de reyes” … accompanied by chocolate and ponche and later… we flew back to Albuquerque

Fiestas Decembrinas

Finalmente llegaron las fiestas decembrinas y nosotros llegamos con ellas a Xalapa:
Lo primero que hicimos fue visitar el barrio de “el dique” para presenciar y ser parte de la mexicanisima tradición de visitar a la virgen de Guadalupe…mientras nos encontrábamos ahí pensaba en que ojala Nancy tuviera la oportunidad de asistir pues culturalmente es algo que representa a la gran mayoría de mexicanos…
entre los miles y miles de peregrinos podíamos ver a niños y niñas en hombros de sus padres, vestidos de inditos , para la virgen… parecía imposible avanzar en ese río de gente, entre enormes coronas, como ofrenda de los muchos grupos que asistían ese día a cantar las mañanitas a la virgen, pero todo estaba tan organizado que se iba avanzando bien…. A los lados, como siempre muchos puestos de comida, juegos y por supuesto imágenes de la virgen donde los niños podían sacarse la tradicional fotografía de esa visita.

Lo que siguió fue la sorpresa a mis padres… ellos no se esperaban vernos en Xalapa en esas fechas… la perfecta oportunidad se presento 2 días después en el cumpleaños de mi sobrina Miriam en donde también vi a Nancy por primera vez después de que nos vimos en Washington…. Aunque hemos estado en contacto através de Skype … fue una grata sorpresa para mis papas… de ahí siguió el cumpleaños de mi hermana Angélica y la organización del 50 aniversario de mis padres…. Asi que estuvimos algo ocupados con los arreglos para tal ocasión. El festejo fue muy familiar pero muy emotivo.

With the arrival of Christmas celebrations we arrived in Xalapa:
The first thing we did was to visit an area called “El Dique” to be present and to be part of one of the moist Mexican traditions : visiting the Guadalupe Virgin ….while we were there I though about Nancy, I hoped she had the opportunity to come and witness such devotion culturally interesting for those who are not Catholic and that represents most mexicans … Among the thousands and thousands of Pilgrims we Could see boys and girls dresden like “inditos” and being carried on their parents shoulders just to see the virgin. … it seemed almost imposible to be able to advance in such a crowd …a mong enormous flower crowns as an offering of the many groups or associations that were there to sing the mananitas to the virgin , but everything was so well organized that we were really getting into the church without a long time to wait .
As usual, on both sides of the streets there were many food stands, games, and of course stands where photographers had beautiful sets with the image of the virgin of Guadalupe where the children could have their pictures taken… traditional souvenirs of their visit on December 12th .

What followed was the surprise for my parents … They did not expect to see us in Xalapa during those days… the opportunity was 2 days latter during mi niece’s birthday party, where I also saw Nancy whom I had not seen since we met in Washington… although we had been in contact through skype .. It was a nice surprise for mi parents … from there we also had mi sister Angelica’s birthday and then the main reason of our trip: my parents 50th wedding anniversary so we were quite busy organizing such celebration … the celebration was very intimate and emmotive

The River of lights

Casi a punto de volar para Mexico nuestras amigas Cynthia Wooley Y Janice Heart nos invitaron a un espectaculo unico tradicional de la epoca decembrina aqui el Albuquerque: “El Rio de las Luces”. Ya que nos dijeron que esto era en el jardin botanico pense que seria una iluminación a lo largo de un rio o de la laguna que hay ahí…..pues casi era asi pero la verdad no esperabamos ver TODO el parque cubierto por diferentes figuras de luces: entre coches, animales, plantas, y flores y personajes navideños, muchisimas con movimiento, incluyendo una seccion en donde pequenos trenes cargando luminarias pasaban por un pueblito, rodeados de mucha gente que tambien admiraba las decoraciones , pasamos mas de un par de horas alimentando el espiritu, terminamos nuestra jornada con una grata cena en un restaurante llamado “Flying Star” , cuyos postres son exquisitos. Era 9 de Diciembre y contando…ibamos a regresar a Xalapa para acompañar a mis papas en una importante celebración….


With our feet almost on the plane to fly back to Mexico Only for the break, our friends Cynthia Wooley and Janice Hart invited us to see a unique show which is also traditional during the Christmas Season here in Albuquerque: “The river of Lights”. Since they told us that this was a display in the Botanical garden, I thought it was going to be something like lights all along a river or the lake there… well I was close but not so close we really didn’t expect to see ALL that section of the park covered by different figures made of lights : among cars, animals, plants and flowers and of course Christmas characters , a lot of them with movement, including a section where 3 small trains carrying luminarias crossed a small town. Surrounded by a lot of people who had attended to see this great display , we spent more than a couple of ours “feeding our souls” . we ended our adventure that night at a nice restaurant called “flying star” which desserts are jus DELICIOUS. It was December 9th and we were about to go back to Xalapa to accompany my parents in an important celebration….
