Hello Xalapa

De regreso en Xalapa pudimos ver a Nancy antes de que se fuera y salimos a algunos lugares cercanos a Xalapa, estoy segura que ambas tuvimos una experiencia muy enriquecedora en nuestras vidas y gracias al intercambio Fulbright ampliamos nuestra vision sobre la cultura en la que vivimos durante el periodo que este duro y reflexionamos sobre nuestra propia cultura....

Back in Xalapa we could see Nancy before she went back home and we went out to some places nearby Xalapa, I am sure that both of us have a very enriching experience in our lives and that thanks to the Fulbright exchange we widen our vision about yhe culture in which we lived during the period that this lasted and we also reflected about our own culture

La riqueza cultural de Albuquerque se respira por doquier y esa es una de las cosas que voy a extranar de esta ciudad no solo por las manifestaciones de arte en todas las galerias, librerias y mercados sino tambien la comida tan rica en aspectos de ingredientes y sabor acompanadas siempre de la pregunta "Verde o rojo? " y para muestra, bastan unos botones!

Albuquerque's cultural richness can be felt everywhere and that is one of the things that I am going to miss about this city not only by all the art in galleries, bookstores and markets but also the "rich" food and I use this word because it is not only because of the ingredients but also by the flavors, always acompanied by the question: "red or green?" and here are some examples!

Kokopelli
Uno de los símbolos indios que vi con mas frecuencia en Albuquerque fue Kokopelli quien se considera muy importante para muchas tribus nativas de la antigua cultura Anazazi de “de las cuatro orillas” (Colorado, Arizona, Nuevo Mexico y Utah), Carmen la cuñada de Nancy quien es descendiente del pueblo de Acoma nos explico que según la leyenda Kokopelli es el creador del hombre, quien va surgiendo de la tierra al sonido de la flauta que Kokopelli toca. Peggy me comento también que Kokopelli es también relacionado con la fertilidad ya sea de cosechas, o la vida humana....
One of the native symbols that I saw more frequently in Albuquerque was Kokopelli who is considered to be very important to many Native American tribes. He is especially prominent in the ancient Anasazi culture of the "Four Corners" area (Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah). Carmen, Nancy’s sister in law explained to us that according to the legend, Kokopelli is the creator of humankind , who is emerging from the soil while listening to Kokopelli’s flute.Peggy also told me that he is related to fertility (I crops and in human beings)

Acoma wedding vase

Un regalo de Cynthia:
En nuestro aniversari o de bodas, nuestra amiga Cynthia nos regalo una jarrita hecha en el pueblo de Acoma, que tiene un significado muy especial: las dos bocas representan dos vidas separadas, y el asa sobre ellas representa la unión de esas dos vidas, en las bodas el padre del futuro esposo entrega esta jarra dos semanas antes de la boda y el día de la boda se llena de agua y los novios toman de cada boca, esto es lo equivalente a la entrega de anillos en otras bodas. Muy interesante no? gracias Cynthia!

On our wedding anniversary, Cynthia gave us a little vase made in the town of Acoma that has a very special meaning: the two ends represent two separate lives , and the handle over them the union of those two lives , in the Indian weddings the father of the future husband gives this vase two weeks before the wedding and on the day of the wedding the vase is filled with holly water and the future husband and wife drink it from an end , and this is equivalent to the exchange of wedding bands. Very interesting Right? Thank you Cynthia!

LA ZIA
Otro aspecto interesante es la bandera de Nuevo México, cuyo origen es también un origen mestizo dado que, por un lado, los colores rojo y amarillo representan la herencia española de sus habitantes y a la vez el sol es un símbolo del pueblo indio de Zia y esta lleno se simbolismos: el circulo es el sol, los 4 rayos de la izquierda representan las 4 etapas del día (amanecer, día, atardecer y anochecer) los 4 rayos de la derecha representan las 4 etapas de la vida (infancia, juventud, edad adulta y edad madura) los 4 rayos de arriba representan las 4 estaciones del año (primavera verano otoño e invierno) y los 4 rayos de abajo representan los 4 puntos cardinales (Norte, Sur, Este y Oeste).

One more interesting aspect is New Mexico’s flag, which origin is also mestizo since, on one hand, the red and yellow color represent the Spanish heritage of its inhabitants and at the same time, the sun is the symbol of the Indian Zia pueblo and is full of symbolisms: the circle is the sun, the 4 left rays are the stages of the day (dawn, daylight, dusk, dark), the 4 right rays represent life (infancy, youth, adulthood , old age),the 4 up rays represent the seasons ( spring, summer, fall and winter) and the 4 down rights represent the 4 cardinal points (North, South, East and West).

ABQ Y EL ARTE SACRO

Una de las cosas valiosas que aprendí mientras estuve en Albuquerque fue sobre el termino “santero” ya que Cynthia tiene un amigo que se dedica a ello, en una de nuestras primeras salidas con cynthia, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a Arturo y tiempo después el me explico algo mas acerca de sus trabajos , como surgió el rescate de este arte y la técnica que el utiliza… vale la pena checar esta información.

Esto es lo que encontré sobre Arturo: Arturo Olivas empezó a pintar santos después de varios viajes a las viejas iglesias, capillas, y misiones de Nuevo Mexico donde le encantaron las pinturas antiguas de los Santos creados por los artistas de Nuevo Mexico dem los siglos XVII, XVIII XIX . Después de mucha experimentación, su trabajo le gano su admisión a la Sociedad de Artistas Coloniales Españoles en Santa Fe. Ha obtenido diversos premios en el “mercado Espanol” y la feria estatal de Nuevo México ( en 1195 recibio el premio Gerald Peters por el mejor uso de materiales y técnicas tradicionales. Su trabajo se encuentra en colecciones permanentes de el Museo de Arte de Denver, y la Colección de la preparatoria Sand Diego en Salt Lake City, Utah. Exibe en varias galerías y museos en todo el Suroestede los EEUU.
One of the many valuable things I learned while I was in Albuquerque was the term “santero” since Cynthia has a friend who dos that for a living , in one of our first outings with Cynthia , we had the opportunity to meet Arturo, and sometime later he explained to me something more about his works, how the rescue of such art emerged and the technique he uses … it is worth to check this information
Here is what I found out about Arturo : Arturo Olivas began painting New Mexican-style Santos after several trips to the old churches, capillas, and missions of New Mexico where he fell in love with the old paintings of the Santos created by New Mexican artists of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. After much experimentation, his work gained admission into the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in Santa Fe. He has won awards at Spanish Market and the New Mexico State Fair. In 1995, he was awarded the Gerald Peters Award for Best Use of Traditional Materials & Techniques. His work is in permanent collections of the Denver Museum of Art, the Regis Museum, and the Juan Diego High School Collection in Salt Lake City, Utah. He exhibits in several galleries and museums throughout the Southwest.

The Isotopes

Nuestros amigos Peggy y Leroy se encargaron una vez mas de asegurarse que experimentáramos mas la cultura americana y no podíamos irnos de Albuquerque si presenciar uno de los partidos del equipo local… los Isotopos radioactivos, y aunque no se mucho de beisbol, disfrute mucho la tarde, el clima, y por supuesto la compañía de nuestros buenos amigos .
Our friends Peggy and Leroy made sure one more time that we experienced more American culture and we could not leave Albuquerque without witnessing one of the baseball games of the local team the Radioactive Isotopes , and although I don’t know much about baseball, I enjoyed the afternoon, the weather ad of course the company of our very good friends.

La ultima cena ( suena familiar?)
Pues bien, llego la hora de que esta aventura en ABQ terminara y esta es nuestra ultima visita al Centro histórico, Robert White y su esposa Pat nos invitaron a comer en un restaurante y después caminamos un poco por el lugar, no puedo evitar la nostalgia de dejar a mis amigos y mis alumnos

Well, the time has come for this adventure to be over, and this is our last time in old town Robert White and his wife invited us to have dinner in a restaurant there and then we walked around, I can’t help feeling nostalgic about leaving my friends and students

UFO’s ?

Roswell
Roswell se encuentra en el condado Chaves, muy cerca de Carlsbad, de hecho lo pasamos camino a las cavernas y de regreso vimos algunas caras familiares (color verde, morado, blanco) asociadas a esta población , la cual no solo es conocida por el famoso incidente Roswell de el 7 de Julio de 1947: una nave espacial que se supone choco en esa área con todo y ocupantes y que algunos creen que tanto la nave como los ocupantes , fueron tomados por los militares para su estudio de forma secreta para no alertar a la población , Roswell también es conocida por su escuela militar, petróleo y ganado , así que nos dimos un tiempo para recorrer algunas de sus calles y disfrutar de una buena comida mexicana.


Roswell is Located in Chaves County, very near Carlsbad. In fact, we passed through it on our way to the caverns and our way back we saw some familiar faces (green, purple and white) related to this town, this town is not only known by the famous incident on July 7th 1947: an unidentified flying object supposedly crashed in the area whit alien occupants and some people believe that the spaceship and their aliens were taken by the military forces to study them in a very secret way to avoid panic among the population , Roswell is also known by its military school, oil and cattle, so we took some time to walk around the streets and enjoy a good Mexican meal.

Viaje al centro de la tierra ?

Carlsbad Caverns
No podiamos dejar Nuevo Mexico sin visitar otros dos sitios emblemáticos de este estado: Carlsbad Caverns y Roswell,y fue gracias a nuestra amiga Therese Samuels y su novio, quienes hicieron que el viaje resultara mas interesante por su amena charla.

Sobre Carlsbad Caverns , considerada otra maravilla mas del sureste de Nuevo México, se encuentra cerca de las montanas de Guadalupe para Info en español hacer click aquí

El lugar esta formado de 113 cuevas , así que iniciamos nuestro recorrido de 3 horas descendiendo a una profundidad de mas de 400 metros, el lugar esta muy bien cuidado y es de muy fácil acceso . El tiempo se pasa sin sentirlo cuando se admiran las obras de la naturaleza dentro de este lugar y a pesar de que en el exterior hacia un poco de calor su interior es muy fresco.

Por la tarde regresamos a Carlsbad para presenciar el espectáculo que se crea al salir los murciélagos de las cuevas (aunque no pudimos tomar fotos pues esta prohibido) pero este video esta excelente! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLufIO5fZ6o&feature=related

We couldn’t leave New Mexico without visiting other two places that are very well known in the state: Carlsbad Caverns and Roswell, and it was thanks to our friend Therese Samuels and her boyfriend, who made the trip more interesting with their anecdotes.

About Carlsbad Caverns, considered one more wonder Southeast of New Mexico, they are located near the Guadalupe Mountains, the place is constituted by 113 caves, so we started our 3 hour tour going down until reaching the deepest point which is more than 400 meters , the place is very well taken care of , and is of easy access for anyone . Time flew without us noticing it while admiring nature’s master pieces and despite the outside temperature was a little hot, the interior is very fresh.
In the afternoon we went back to Carlsbad to witness the great view created when the bats come out of the caves (and although we could not take pictures because it forbidden, I found a very nice video I include here).

Volvimos a Verdad o Consecuencias con Judy en donde conocimos a un amigo suyo que se dedica a la búsqueda de cuarzos y quien también nos acompañó a Elephant Butt… de ahí Judy nos llevo a un nuevo club de golf en donde pudimos disfrutar de un bello atardecer y de la estructura y decoración del lugar… casi se me olvida mencionar que también visitamos un monumento que es .una replica en miniatura del que se encuentra en Washington DC dedicado a la guerra de Vietnam y que visitamos cuando inicio este intercambio
We went back to Truth or Consequences with Judy where we met a friend of hers whose main activity is climbing the surrounding mountains to look for quartz and who also went with us to Elephant View… From there Judy took us to a new golf club where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset together with the building and decoration of that place. … I almost forget to mention that we also visited a monument which is a replica of the monument in Washington dedicated to Vietnam War and that we visited when this exchange started.

ELEPHANT BUTTE
Despues de White Sands visitamos Elephant Butte, el lago recreativo mas grande de Nuevo Mexico http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_Butte_Reservoirel lago surgio debido a la construccion de una presa en 1916 a través del Rio Grande y tiene 40 millas de longitud y mas de 200 millas de extensión. Aunque se construyo para irrigar y controlar inundaciones, el lago es uno de los lugares recreativos por excelencia en donde se juegan varios deportes acuáticos , siendo el mas popular la pesca. Ahi tambien pudimos observar de cerca los habitantes del area.
¿Porque el nombre de “Elephant Butte” ? porque la isla en medio del lago, parece un elefante…como pueden ver en las fotos.

The lake Was created by a dam constructed in 1916 across the Rio Grande, and is 40 miles long with more than 200 miles of shoreline. Although constructed to provide for irrigation and flood control, the lake is New Mexico’s premier water recreation facility. A wide variety of water sports are available at the lake, with fishing being one of the most popular. We could also observe the inhabitants of that place.

Why the name? simply because the “island” in the middle of the lake resembles an elephant.

Very Large Array
Un lugar que no visitamos pero que considero muy importante e interesante para una próxima visita es the Very large Array (LVA), Lugar donde se encuentran los radio telescopios mas fotografiados del mundo, utilizados entre otras cosas, para mandar mensajes al espacio. Hay 27 antenas en el lugar y cada antena tiene un diámetro de 25 metros Y pesa 230 toneladas!. Si ustedes vieron la película “contacto” con Jodie Foster podrán identificar este lugar… el tema de los ovnis es algo también frecuente en Nuevo México .para ver un poco de información en español http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Large_Array

Ubicado en Socorro, este no es su único objetivo, ya que se han realizado estudios muy importantes y ha habido varios descubrimientos astrológicos gracias a estas antenas que resultan muy impresionante
A place that we did not visit but that I consider very interesting and important for a next visit is the Very large Array (LVA) , where the most photographed radio telescopes in the world are found, the telescopes are used among other uses, to send messages to space. Un desierto blanco

WHITE SANDS
Finalmente llegamos a white sands http://www.americansouthwest.net/new_mexico/white_sands/national_monument.html, uno de los monumentos nacionales muy conocido gracias a sus dunas de arenas blancas que sin importar el calor (estábamos como a 103 grados F) nunca están calientes! Debido a los elementos que la integran (el yeso entre ellos) esta maravilla tiene una extensión de 275 millas cuadradas (son las dunas de yeso mas grandes del mundo) y además de sus encantos naturales se ha convertido en set de varios videos y películas que en su mayoría han sido de ciencia ficción por ejemplo: 2008 Year One , 2007 Transformers, 2006 The Astronaut Farmer,2005 Jarhead,2004 Birthdays,
