Santa Fe Again

de vuelta....



El 13 de Abril Cynthia nos invito a Santa Fe, asi que regresamos a la capilla de Nuestra Senora de Loretto y a la catedral ya que Cesar no habia estado aqui cuando vine con al hermana de Nancy, en esta segunda occasion, supe algunas cosas nuevas, por ejemplo,Que la escalera de la capilla de Loretto no tenia un pasamanos cuando se hizo, tambien que la estatua de la India nativa a la entrada de la cathedral es de Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680) primera santa india nativa. Ya dentro de la catedral tambien descubri un area para discapacitados y un vitral igualal que se encuentra en el vaticano. Pasamos la mañana recorriendo las diferentes galerias y disfrutando de las enormes estatuas de metal que se encuentran ahí.



On April 13th Cynthia invited us to go to Santa Fe, this time we went back to Loretto Chapel and the Cathedral again because Cesar had not been there yet this second time I learned some new things: for example: the stairs at Loretto chapel did not have a banister when it was made, also, the statue of the Indian woman at the entrance of the cathedral is the statue of Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680) the first native American Indian saint. Inside the cathedral I also discovered an area for handicapped peopleand a stainglass which issimilar totheonefound inthe vatican. We spent the morning walking around and looking at different galleries and enjoying the big metal statues displayed there.

MISCELANEOUS

Esta vez nos invitaron a una fiesta Brasileña: una de mis estudiantes que llego aquí al mismo tiempo que cesar y yo . Ella se encuentra aquí porque su esposos esta estudiando un doctorado en la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM) era su cumpleaños así que disfrutamos de la compañía de gente agradable (principalmente brasileños) y buena comida Brasileña….el día siguiente acompañamos a Cynthia a pasear a “las muchachotas” (Leona y Osa) en un área cerca de su casa.

This time we were invited to go to a Brazilian party: one of my students who came here at the same time Cesar and I arrived. She is here with her husband who is studying a PHD at the University of New Mexico (UNM) it was her birthday so we enjoyed the company of nice people (mainly Brazilians) and good Brazilian food …. The next day we accompanied our friend Cynthia to take the “muchachonas” (Leona and Osa) for a walk in a nearby place

El Mercado sobre ruedas


Sobre la avenida Central. Los fines de semana (siempre y cuando no se haya organizado otro evento) se realiza el mercado sobre ruedas o “flea market” esta vez Janice nos llevo a verlo….fue como un viaje en el tiempo para regresar a México: puestos de cosas chinas, cosas de segunda mano, artesanía del área, joyeria, puestos de CDs, ropa, frutas y verduras y mucha gente alrededor nuestro comprando, viendo y socializando. Mientras estábamos ahí nos encontramos a Meredith con su familia, otra de las muchas de las personas que he conocido durante mi estancia en CNM .


On Central Avenue , on weekends ( as long as there is no other event planned to happen there) there is a big flea market , this time, Janice took us there to see it… it was like traveling in one of those time machines and going back to Mexico: stands offering chinese items, second hand items, handcrafts , jewelry, CD stands, clothing, fruits and vegetables and many of people around us either buying, seeing and socializing. While we were there, we met Meredith with her family, one of the many helpful persons I have met during my stay at CNM.

High school visits



CNM abrió sus puertas a las preparatorias o cualquier otra persona interesada en ver algunas de las carreras técnicas que aquí se ofrecen: herrería, carpintería, plomería, electricidad, artes culinarias, enfermería, paisaje urbano, etc estuvieron mostrando la manera en que trabajan y algunos productos terminados…. Muchos tenían cosas que uno podía hacer y había algunas competencias. Así que el 4 de Abril acompañé a Randy a uno de los “tours” que estaban dando. Me gusto mucho ver la cantidad de talleres, herramientas y materiales que estan a disposicion de los alumnos de CNM y mas aun, fue muy interesante saber que muchas de estas carreras informan que el alumno tiene un 100% de oportunidad de ser contratado al terminar sus estudios. Hasta tienen un taller exclusivo para la reparación de modelos Ford!.... muchas de estas cosas son creadas gracias a las asociaciones con compañías y empresas del área… esta fue sin duda una de las mejores maneras de saber mas acerca de la escuela en la cual trabajo.
Poco después Penny, otra de mis colegas me invito a ir con ella al taller de herrería en donde uno de sus estudiantes nos invito a aprender un poco sobre esto.

CNM opened its doors to high school students or any other person interested in seeing some of the things it has to offer: welding, carpentry, plumbing, electricity, culinary arts, nursing, landscaping, etc where showing the way they work and some finished products… many of this had hands-on presentations and there were even some competitions going on. So on April 4th I accompanied Randy to one of the “tours” they were giving. I was very pleased to see how many workshops, tools and materials are available for CNM students and even more to know that many of the programs it offers prepare students to grant a job in 100% of the times. They even have a workshop for only repairing Ford models!…. Many of these things are created thanks to partnerships with companies and businesses of the area… this was undoubtedly one of the best ways to know more about the school I am working at.
Later on… I went back with Penny one of my colleagues who had a student that invited both of us to try a little bit of welding.

Marzo 28. hoy Peggy y yo caminamos por los corredores cercanos a la cafetería de CNM para ver algunas de las pinturas que los estudiantes de arte hicieron. El concurso era combinar las obras de dos artistas completamente diferentes utilizando la técnica I Madonnary ( arte italiano callejero con gis que data del siglo XVI y llamado así porque originalmente pintaban solo madonnas). He aquí unas muestras de los trabajos


March 28th Today, Peggy and I walked by the corridors nerby the cafeteria in the campus to see some pictures drawn by art students: the contest was combining the works of two totally Different artists using the I Maddonari technique (street art with chalk dating back to the XVI century and called like that because originally they only painted madonnas).Here are some samples of it.

EASTER

El fin de semana de Pascuas nuestra amiga Peggy nos invito a la reunión familiar para celebrar las pascuas en Belén, su pueblo natal. Pensábamos ir en el tren llamado “correcaminos” pero no pudimos hacerlo pues no da servicio los fines de semana. Así que Peggy nos recogió en Albuquerque … experimentar la Pascua como celebración familiar fue algo agradable. La reunion fue en la casa de los padres de Leroy. Primero comimos y después los niños buscaron los huevos escondidos en el patio; después de eso todos en la familia empezaron a escoger un huevo para una competencia en parejas que lanzarían los huevos cada vez aumentando la distancia entre si. En esta competencia cesar y leroy compitieron por el primer lugar co la hermana de Leroy. Después fue el turno de los jóvenes de buscar los huevos (algunos de los cuales contenían dinero) y por ultimo llego el turno de los adultos. Pasamos un buen día participando y viendo el juego de voley ball y disfrutando la calidez de una familia Nuevo Mexicana.
On the weekend of Easter, our friend Peggy invited us to join her family for Easter in Belen, her hometown, we thought about riding the train called “Rail runner’ but could not ride it because it does not run on weekends, so she picked us up in ABQ …experience Easter as a family celebration was nice. The gathering was at Leroy’s parents’ house. First we ate and then came the time for the children to look for the eggs, after that, everybody choose and egg because there was going to be an egg tossing competition where Cesar and Leroy ended competing for the first place with Leroy’s sister, after that the teens’ turn came to look for the eggs (some of them had money inside) and after that the adults. We spend a nice day participating and watching the volleyball game and enjoying the warmth of a New Mexican Family

La primavera inicia


Con la llegada de la primavera, las zonas áridas se transforman y es realmente asombroso ver la cantidad y diversidad de flores … camino a la escuela y en el campus se ven tanto arbustos, árboles y flores que surgen de la nada celebrando el cambio de estación. Una de las primeras flores que vi. en las jardineras fue la flor que se asocia con la celebración de la pascua aquí en los EEUU; los narcisos, junto con los tulipanes y algunas otras flores de la familia de los lirios . ahora entiendo cuando me decian que aquí si se distinguen las 4 estaciones.
Aunque también con la primavera llegaron las alergias al campus, afortunadamente yo me salve de ellas pero algunos de mis alumnos no.



With the arrival of spring the arid areas are transformed and it is really Amazing to see the amount and diversity of flowers … on the way to school and in the campus you are able to see bushes, trees, and single flowers coming out from “nowhere” , celebrating the change of season. One of the first flowers I saw in the gardens was the flower that is associated with Easter here in the USA: daffodils, together with tulips, and some other flowers of the Lilly family. I now understand what they meant when they told me that here the 4 seasons are clearly noticeable.
And although allergies also came with spring I was lucky not to get them but some of my students did.
