Flor de Cempazuchitl
El altar en CNM…. Le sugirieron a Janice que lo pusieramos en una de las salas de juntas en el 5o piso para que tanto maestros como alumnos pudieran verlo… los primeros elementos fueron dos Calaveras que compre y vestí con algunas cosas que traje y fueron las primeras en instalarse en las oficinas del quinto piso… Janice estaba muy entusiasmada y mientras ella compraba algunas cosas para el altar, me di a la tarea de investigar un poco para tartar de hacer un altar sencillo pero que contubiera algunos de los elementos mas importantes y que no pueden faltar asi que me decidi a hacerlo de 3 escalones… Janice me llevo a su casa para ver que era lo que podriamos usar… asi que trajimos unos tablones, unos blocks y tambien tome prestadas algunas de sus canastas y platos. La maestra Therese Samuels tambien me presto algunas Cazuelas, jarros y juguetes que pusimos, adem’as se dio a la tarea de buscar flores grandes… ya que Janice y yo habiamos visto flor de muerto en un vivero pero estaban super pequenas y muy muy caras!!! Pero las flores eran necesarias Como si no iban a llegar los muertitos sin tener el aroma de las flores?

Asi que el dia 30 de Noviembre Janice y yo colocamos las cosas en el altar… Janice encontro pan de muerto en una panaderia de un supermercado mexicano y compro chocolate “abuelita” esta vez , mis muertitos no pudieron probar alcohol pues la botella de tequila no se podia poner debido a reglas de la escuela, tampoco pude quemar incienso o encender las velas… pero bueno, por lo menos nos quedo muy bien con los papeles picados que Cynthia me presto mas algunos que me mando mi familia y lo soles que habia yo hecho en el Centro Cultural Hispanico. (claro tambien coloque las Calaveras que Cynthia y yo hicimos ahi!! Tambien puse unas canastitas de papel picado que algunos de los maestros ayudaron a decorar ademas de algunas fotos
Los maestros tenian programada una pequeña reunion el 31 asi que aprovechamos y la hicieron en donde colocamos el altar . Tambien les pude enseñar unas fotos de altares que Greg Luganis me ayudo a preparar para esa ocasion. Me senti muy satisfecha de poder compartir un poquito de una de las celebraciones mexicanas que es ta entre mis favoritas



The altar at CNM…. Janice was told that she should put the altar in one of the meeting rooms on the 5th floor so that teachers and students could see it… The first altar element were two skeletons I bought and dressed with some things I had brought from and they were the first ones to arrive to the office on that floor…. Janice was really enthusiastic about it and while she was buying some things for the altar I researched a little bit to try to make a simple altar but that had all the most important elements that any altar must have so I decided to make it of 3 steps … Janice took me to her house to see what we could use ….so we brought some pieces of wood, blocks and I also borrowed some of her baskets , dishes, etc. Other teacher that works for CNM Therese Samuels also lend me some pots, “clay cups’ and toys we placed besides that she offered to get some big marigold flowers for the altar since Janice and I had already seen marigolds at a nursery but they were too small and too expensive!!! But the flowers were necessary, how could our “dearly departed” get to the altar without the flower’s scent?
So on November 30th, Janice and I placed the things in the altar …. Janice found some “bread of the dead” in the bakery of a Mexican supermarket and bought “Abuelita” chocolate this time the departed could not taste any alcohol because the bottle of tequila could not be placed due to school rules, nor could I burn inscience or light the candles… but in the end and at least it was a pretty nice altar with the paper cuts that Cynthia lent us and ones that my family sent me and of course the ones I had made at The Hispanic Cultural center … I also placed the sugar school Cynthia and I decorated and some little paper baskets that some of the teachers helped decorate together with some pictures.

OLOR A MUERTOS….
El 27 de Octubre fui nuevamente al Centro Cultural Hispano porque iban a tener diversas actividades relacionadas al Dia de Muertos, Iba yo a ver a Cynthia a las 12 pero como tenia que depender de las corridas de los autobuses, decidi salir antes y llegué a las 11 de la mañana.

Ahi conoci a un muchacho que estaba haciendo un diseño de la “Catrina” que asemejaria un enorme papel picado asi que solo se necesitaba carbon y gis blanco … ya que contaba con mucho tiempo antes de que Cynthia llegara y para sacar un poco de estres me ofreci como voluntaria para ayudarle, y para cuando Cynthia llegó ya se le veia forma asi que las dos entramos al edificio donde algunos de sus amigos estaban conduciendo algunos de los talleres: las familias estaban aprendiendo como hacer coronas con papel de china naranja simulando flor de muerto, como decorar calaveritas de azucar, como hacer papel picado y como hacer otrs flores . tambien habia algunos articulos a la venta y alguinos altars hechos por escuelas del area y otras personas a quienes les gusta preserver esta tradicion. Ah! Tambien aqui escuchamos una platica sobre las festividades. Cybnthia compro una pintura muy creative para regalarsela a su novio Alan y que nos gusto a ambas. Fue asi como inicie la celebracion del dia de los muertos



On October 27th I went to the Hispanic Cultural Center because they were having different family activities related to the Dia de Muertos, I was going to see Cynthia at 12 but since I had to depend on the bus schedule I decided to leave earlier and was there by 11 am. There I met a guy who was making the design of a “Catrina” that was supposed to be a cut out paper, so only coal and white chalk was needed… since I had a lot of time before Cynthia arrived, and to get ride of some stress, I volunteered to help, and by the time Cynthia arrived we had made a lot of progress, then Cynthia and I went inside the building where some of her friends were leading some of the workshops: the families were learning How to make a wreath with orange tissue paper resembling marigold flowers, how to decorate sugar skulls, how to make paper cuts and how to make flowers. There were also some items on sale and some altars made by schools of the area and other people who like to preserve this tradition. Oh! We also listened to a talk about the festivity there. Cynthia bought a very nice drawing for her boyfriend which we both liked. I started to celebrate the “day of the dead” this way.

FINALES DE OCTUBRE


Empieza el otoño y la mayoria de los arboles tienen sus hojas de color Amarillo, ademas de prepararme para Halloween comprando algunos dulces, Janice y yo hemos estado programando el altar de muertos en la escuela.
Mientras tanto Carmen me invitó el fin de semana a su casa y salimos a caminar por el Rio Bravo, en donde habia unos miradores con informacion sobre la flora y fauna del lugar… en el camino, Carmen me enseñó un area boscosa que se incendió y en la cual un bombero esta esculpiendo esculturas de los arboles muertos, tambien fuimos a una preparatoria privada y de regreso Carmen me invito a comer en un restaurante chino.



Autumn is already here and most of the trees have yellow leaves, besides getting ready for Halloween buying some candies Janice and I have been programming the Altar for the dead for this school.

In the meantime Carmen invited me on the weekend to go to her house and we went for a walk to the Rio Grande, on the bridge there were some platforms with interesting information about the birds, fish and plants from the area… on the way, we went through an area where the trees had been on fire so a fireman has created wonderful wooden sculptures out of them. Carmen also showed me a private high school and invited me to a Chinese restaurant for lunch.

Our New apartment
Durante los primeros dias de Octubre, Peggy, Carmen y Janice me ayudaron a buscar un Nuevo departamento, finalmente en una de nuestras cacerias, janice me encontro lo que pense era una excelente oportunidad: no tan caro, amueblado, muy cerca del Campus y sin penalidades por romper el contrato de renta!. Solo tenia que caminar 15 minutos y estaria en el campus y 10 minutos para esta en la Ave Central( el Corazon de esta ciudad). Antes de firmar el contrato, peggy y Ela ( una tutora en el Centro de Aprendizaje)me acompañaron a verlo para tomar la decision final sobre Columbia 424



During the first days of October, Peggy, Carmen and Janice helped me to look for a new apartment, finally in one of those apartment hunting outings Janice found for me what I thought was an excellent opportunity: not so expensive, furnished, very close to main campus and with no termination Fee for breaking the lease!: I only had to walk 15 minutes to be in the campus and 10 to be right on central avenue: the heart of the town. Before signing the contract, Peggy and Ela (a tutor at the Language Center ) went with me to see it to make the final decision about 424 Columbia SE .

A trip to Santa Fe















El 21 de Octubre la hermana de Nancy y sus 2 sobrinas me llevaron a la ciudad de Santa Fe , fue un viaje muy agradable y disfrute coonociendo otros miembros de la familia de nacy. Finalmente iba a conocer algunas de sus famosas galerias y tiendas exclusivas.
Santa Fe fue fundada por los españoles en 1610 y es la capital de Nuevo Mexico. La hermana de Nancy me dijo que esta ciudad es algo cara y que muchos artistas se han establecido ahi.
Despues de caminar por la plaza principal , nos dirigimos hacia nuestra primera visita: “El Palacio ‘Real” o la “Casa de los Gobernadores” que es ahora un gran museo. Ahi pude ver una coleccion de Milagritos, y muchas pinturas religiosas ademas de mapas, riflesmuebles y otros elementos historicos de este estado. Una cosa que vi diferente fueron las pintutras de santos en los cofres de los coches que ahi se exhibian y que son una piezas de arte unicas!

Despues de ahi nos dirigimos a la galleria de Georgia O’Keeffe (1880’s) en dodne apreciamos algunas de las pinturas y fotos de esta ertaordinaria pintora de arte moderno. Debo admitir que antes de esta visita no sabia quie era ella.

Habiendo disfrutado un almuerzo nos dirigimos a la cathedral de San Francisco donde pude ver sus esculturas en el atrio y su interior unico. La caterdral se encuentra en la calle del mismo nombre y data de los años 1711 1 1714 . en este lugar habia antes una iglesia construida por fray Alonzo benavides y destruida en 168o durante la rebellion Pueblo.

Tambien fuimos a la famosa Capilla de Loretto cuya principal atraccion es su escalera construida en ua sola pieza. Segun la leyenda, The Miraculous Staircase la escalera fue construida enter 1877 y 1881 y su construccion tomo por lo menos 6 meses. La escalera tiene dos vueltas de 360 grados y no se usaron ni clavos ni pegamento … es realmente una pieza de arte !
La capilla es de estilo Gotico y es similar a la Santa Capilla del rey Luis IX en Paris. La piedra para esta capilla fue llevada a Santa Fe de lugares de alrededor de 20 millas y su vitral fue traido de paris en 1876. terminada en 1878 tiene un altar estilo Gotico y frescos que datan de 1890s.


On October 21st Nancy’s sister and nieces took me to the city of Santa Fe; it was a really nice drive and I enjoyed meeting other members of Nancy’s family. Finally, I was going to see some of its famous galleries and expensive shops.
Santa Fe was founded by the Spaniards in 1610 and is the capital of New Mexico. I was told by Nancy’s sister that this city is somewhat expensive and that many artists have made it its home.

































After walking around the main square, we headed to our first stop: “El Palacio ‘Real” or “Casa de los Gobernadores” which is now a nice museum. There I could see the collection of Milagritos, and many religious paintings together with maps, riffles, furniture and other historical items from this state. One thing that I consider different was the paintings of saints on the hoods of cars they are really nice works of art!
Then we went to the Georgia O’Keeffe (1880’s) Gallery where I could see some of her extraordinary (modern art) paintings, I must admit that before this visit I did not know who she was!.
After a very nice lunch we headed to San Francis’ Cathedral where I could see its nice sculptures and unique interior. The cathedral is on San Francisco Street, and dates back to 1711 - 1714. This place was formerly occupied by the Church built in Romanesque style by Fray Alonzo Benavides, which was destroyed during the Pueblo Rebellion of 1680.

Later they also took me to the famous Loretto Chapel where the staircase built in one peace is the main attraction. According to the legend, The Miraculous Staircase was constructed or inspired by St. Joseph the Carpenter, and was built sometime between 1877 and 1881. It took at least six months to build, and has two 360 degree turns with no nails or glue involved. It’s just beautiful!











The chapel is Gothic Revival in style and is similar to the King Louis IX's Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Stone for the Chapel was carried from around Santa Fe ,about 20 miles from Santa Fe. The stained glass in the Loretto Chapel was brought from Paris in 1876. The Chapel was completed in 1878 and has a Gothic altar and frescos from the 1890s.

TAILGATE PARTY Y BALLOON FIESTA

Hasta ahora, no he mencionado a otras personas que hemos conocido aqui y con quienes hemos establecido amistad. Una de ellas nos ha tambien ayudado mucho en nuestro proceso de ajuste a la vida en ABQ: su nombre es Peggy Garcia Marquez . Peggy es una de las Supervisoras en el Centro que atiende a los alumnos de ESL (donde doy mis grupos de conversacion) El 5 de Octubre Peggy me invito a su casa en Belen porque su hija habia sido elegida pricesa del Homecoming de su escuela preparatoria asi que asistimos al juego de futbol en el que al medio tiempo su hija daria un paseo por el campo de futbol. Antes de cada partido de futbol los aficionados acostumbran lo que se llaman “tailgate party”… en este tipo de fiesta llevan sus camionetas fuera del campo de futbol y comparten comida y bebidas con los amigos… justo antes del partido.




Despues de pasar la noche en su casa nos levantamos a las 4 de la mañana para poder asistir a la ascencion en masa de los globos aerostaticos, un evento internacional que se realiza cada año en Albuquerque: Ballon Fiesta esta vez con la participacion de alrededor de 700 globos de todo el mundo sus hermanas hija y sobrinas llegamos al parquet al amanecer y pudimos disfrutar del espectaculo. espero tener la oprtunidad de subirme a uno de estos globos antes de regresar amexico!

Dentro del parque tambien pude ver algunas danzas autoctonas: para mi sorpresa las danzas eran de un grupo de danza Mexica. Bueno, creo que algunas veces olvido que Nuevo mexico es de hecho “viejo mexico” verdad?



So far, I haven’t mentioned some other people that we have met here and with whom we have also made a nice friendship. One of them has also helped us a lot in our adaptation process while being here in ABQ: her name is Peggy Garcia Marquez Peggy is one of the supervisors in the center that assists ESL students and where I give my conversation groups. On October 5th Peggy invited me to her home in Belen because her daughter had been elected homecoming princess for her high school ( I also met her husband Leroy) so we attended the football game where during the half time Leroy and Peggy would walk across the football court with their daughter. Before each match, the fans use to do what they call “tailgate party”… in this type of party people take their trucks or cars outside the football stadium and share their food and drinks with friends and family right before the game.


After spending the night at Peggy’s home, we got up at 4 am to be able to go to the balloon mass ascension, as part of the balloon’s international event that takes place in ABQ every year: The Balloon Fiesta, this time about 7000 balloons where taking part in it her sisters, daughter and nieces and I arrived to the site at dawn and could enjoy the this spectacular view....I just hope to be able to ride one of these ballons before I go back to Mexico!


I could also see some native dances while in that place, to my surprise it was a mexica group… well I guess I sometimes forget that New Mexico was Old Mexico Right?
